The thyroid gland is located in the front of the neck. It produces thyroid hormone. Thyroid hormone is produced in response to TSH hormone released by the pituitary gland. Disorders of thyroid function cause problems with metabolism and high or low energy levels. They may also cause problems with muscle strength, mood swings, weight control and tolerating heat or cold.
Thyroid diseases include:
- Hyperthyroidism – too much thyroid hormone
- Hypothyroidism – too little thyroid hormone
- Benign (non-cancerous) nodules
- Thyroid cancer
